💖 Personality & Temperament
🐾 Update: 2/18 - Last Update
Nellie has decided she is not “in a phase.”
She is, in fact, a fully formed opinion.
She isn’t struggling with confinement — she has reviewed it, considered it, and officially declined.
She isn’t confused during separation — she is conducting a strongly worded protest.
And she isn’t chaotic during play — she is running a highly strategic recreational operation.
At this point, her resistance to restriction isn’t a glitch in the system.
It’s a feature.
She prefers:
Agency.
Movement.
Engagement.
Possibly drafting her own policies.
Give her a toy? It becomes a tactical challenge.
Give her space? She uses the full square footage.
Contain her? She files an immediate vocal appeal.
And yet — nothing unstable is happening here.
She is still socially confident.
Still curious.
Still deeply connected.
The real shift isn’t intensity.
It’s definition.
Her personality isn’t bouncing around anymore — it’s locking in. What once looked like “Is she just being stubborn?” is steadily revealing itself as drive, persistence, and a very strong internal compass.
With structure and maturity, that same “absolutely not” energy is likely to become resilience, determination, and the kind of dog who does not quit on anything — including her people.
Nellie isn’t escalating.
She’s clarifying her brand.
🐾 Update: 2/11
This week revealed something important about Nellie:
What looks like intensity… is actually engagement.
Across outdoor freedom, fence exposure, kennel separation, and even vet day, Nellie has continued to prove she is not fearful or fragile. She is invested. When something matters, she shows up fully. When she wants connection, she asks for it. When she wants movement, she doesn’t hesitate — she launches.
Her separation vocalization remains part of her story, but the pattern is crystal clear: this is persistence, not panic. She doesn’t shut down. She doesn’t spiral. She protests because, in her mind, there is something far more exciting happening somewhere else — and she would prefer to be there.
Socially, she has leveled up. Where earlier sessions showed thoughtful assessment and brief caution, she now runs toward new dog interactions with eagerness. Confidence isn’t something she experiments with anymore — it’s something she carries into the situation.
And here’s the real plot twist:
Nellie isn’t dramatic.
She’s determined.She isn’t anxious.
She’s expressive. Her enthusiasm, intelligence, and drive are all moving in the same direction now. As her frustration tolerance continues to catch up with her curiosity and motivation, that determination is very likely to become one of her greatest strengths.
Because Nellie doesn’t react halfway.
She participates fully.
🐾 Update: 2/4
This past week, Nellie has continued to prove that she is equal parts confident explorer, playful spark, and very determined opinion-haver. Outdoors, she moves with enthusiasm and purpose, bouncing happily between investigating her surroundings, checking in with her handler, and launching into spontaneous play. She doesn’t wander aimlessly — she patrols with intent.
Social exposure continues to be an area where Nellie shines in her own thoughtful way. When introduced to unfamiliar dogs behind a fence, she approached with curiosity and just enough caution to show she’s thinking things through. Some moments she’s bold and ready to engage; other times she pauses to assess. Either way, she’s not reacting impulsively — she’s gathering data like a tiny scientist in a fur coat.
Alone time, however, remains a work in progress. Nellie is very clear about her feelings when separated or contained and is not shy about sharing them. Vocal protests and escape attempts continue, but importantly, this behavior appears rooted in persistence and motivation rather than fear. There’s no shutdown or panic — just a puppy who firmly believes she should be somewhere else doing something more interesting.
Handling and care routines gave us another important data point: Nellie has strong opinions about bathtime, and they are not positive ones. Physical restraint, especially when her energy is high, is a hard no in her book. This aligns perfectly with her movement-driven, agency-loving temperament and will respond best to gradual, positive conditioning as she matures (and possibly some strategic bribery).
Overall, this week highlights a puppy with a big personality and an even bigger presence. Nellie is social, intelligent, and deeply engaged with her world — she’s just still learning how to tolerate moments when the world says “wait.” With thoughtful guidance, structure, and an outlet for her energy and curiosity, she continues to show excellent potential as a bonded, interactive companion for a home that enjoys participation as much as she does.
🐾 Update: 1/28
Over the past week, Nellie has shown meaningful growth in both confidence and emotional regulation, all while keeping her playful, bouncy personality firmly intact. She continues to approach her environment with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a joyful readiness to engage. Outside, she explores confidently, happily incorporating little “treasures” like leaves into her play, and moves easily between independent exploration and interactive moments with her handler.
This week also offered a great look at Nellie’s thoughtful approach to new social situations. During a controlled confidence exercise involving visual exposure to larger dogs behind a fence, Nellie showed healthy discernment. She approached cautiously, chose to disengage, then independently returned for a second look on her own terms. After calmly gathering the information she needed, she positioned herself behind her handler without distress, using them as a secure base rather than reacting with fear. She showed no signs of shaking, whining, or avoidance—just quiet confidence, awareness, and trust.
A notable developmental milestone this week was Nellie’s progress during alone time. While she has previously voiced her preference for company, that sensitivity has begun to soften as her self-regulation improves. During recent sessions, she settled calmly and even fell asleep, showing that she is learning to handle brief independence when given clear structure and consistency.
Overall, this week reflects a puppy who is socially confident, emotionally intelligent, and increasingly capable of regulating herself. Nellie remains expressive, playful, and people-oriented, while also showing the ability to pause, assess, and make thoughtful decisions. These patterns suggest she is maturing into a well-balanced companion—one who bonds deeply with her people while continuing to grow in confidence during independent moments.
🐾 Update: 1/21
Over the past week, Nellie’s vocal expression has softened as her engagement with the environment increases. As she becomes more involved in activity, her vocals tend to quiet naturally, suggesting that her communication is closely tied to engagement rather than a need for reassurance. When she is busy exploring, she appears calm, focused, and content.
Nellie continues to be the first to test boundaries and discover new ways out of her pen. She shows a strong desire to wander and explore beyond defined spaces. Unlike some of her littermates, she does not consistently seek confirmation from people before moving on, demonstrating an early sense of independence and confidence in her surroundings.
Her exploration style is self-directed and curious. Nellie is comfortable moving through space on her own, investigating her environment without needing constant proximity or reassurance. These patterns reflect a puppy who is naturally independent, observant, and increasingly self-assured as her awareness continues to mature.
🐾 Update: 1/14
Nellie is the second most vocal puppy in the litter and uses a range of sounds to communicate. She vocalizes during play through playful growling and also cries at times when waiting, separated, or seeking engagement. Her vocal behavior is expressive rather than constant.
She enjoys active play and frequently engages with her littermates and environment. During play, her vocalization is interaction-driven and playful in nature.
Nellie likes to wander and explore but consistently stays nearby, maintaining awareness of her surroundings and proximity rather than roaming far.
Please Note : As with all puppies, temperament traits at this stage may change as development continues. Growth stages, routine changes, and environment can influence behavior from week to week. Nellie’s current temperament reflects a puppy who is expressive, socially engaged, and responsive to interaction as she matures. There is no guarantee of future disposition, as behavior can be influenced by growth stages, environment, training, handling, and life experiences
