 AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program

This Program is a valuable initiative designed to promote responsible dog ownership and provide puppies with a strong foundation for a well-behaved life. Focused on Socialization, Training, Activity, and Responsibility, the program encourages early learning and bonding between owners and their young dogs. Puppies in the program are taught essential behaviors such as walking on a leash, responding to basic commands, and being comfortable around people and other animals. At the same time, owners gain important skills in positive reinforcement and effective handling. Open to puppies under one year old, the program requires attendance in a training class taught by an AKC-approved instructor. After completing the course, puppies are evaluated through a short test that assesses both their behavior and the owner’s understanding of basic care and responsibility. Upon passing, participants receive a S.T.A.R. Puppy package that includes a certificate, medal, training handbook, discounted registration with AKC Companion Animal Recovery, and a monthly e-newsletter with helpful training tips. The program not only builds confidence in young dogs but also helps prevent behavior problems by promoting consistency and positive interaction from the start. Many families find that completing the S.T.A.R. Puppy Program leads to better behavior at home and in public. It also serves as a stepping stone to more advanced AKC titles such as Canine Good Citizen. Veterinarians and trainers frequently recommend the program for its emphasis on early development and structured training. By participating in S.T.A.R., owners invest in their puppy’s future while fostering a strong, lifelong bond.
